HISTIOCYTOMA

This is a common benign neoplasm, with unknown cause. They usually affect young dogs; several breeds are predisposed, including the Boxer & Great Dane.

They are usually solitary, and occur most commonly on the head, pinnae (ear flaps), and limbs. They are small, firm, dome or button shaped, well circumscribed, dermal in location (on the skin, not under), and frequently ulcerated. They are fast growing but benign. The majority undergo spontaneous regression (go away on their own) within 3 months, but surgical removal may be recommended.
